Posada

 

Posada is the name of the town nearest to our Bed & Breakfast, but it is also an ancient Sardinian word, coming from Spanish, which literally means "layover", "rest stop".

The name comes from the ancient activity that was carried out here: it was a relay station where passengers could rest and change horses during their journey between Olbia and the centre of the island. At what is now known as San Giovanni, the Romans had the "Portus Luguidonis": they called it "Pausata". Sardinians still call it "Pasatta".

In all of Sardinia the hospitality of Posada is proverbial: in the Sardinian language the expression "s'Amicu 'e Pasatta" means a friend you can count on for shelter and hospitality.

The area has seen many important historical events. In the second half of the fourteenth century, the "Castello della Fava" was the holiday home of Eleonora of Arborea, a famous judge and ruler on the island in the fifteenth century. Only the tower of her castle now remains, but the site was chosen for its strategic location between the sea and the hills. Posada was the main town of the Baronia (Barony) of Posada, the most important Sardinian feud and the only medieval Riviera town on the Tyrrhenian coast of the island.

The ancient baronies of Posada and Galtellì, located in the north-eastern part of the island, are uniquely fascinating and mysterious, sinking their roots into the times of the judges and Spanish domination.
The charming architecture is typically Mediterranean.

The naturalistic attractions at Posada are many and magnificent. Open spaces are populated by rare fauna and strikingly coloured by the variety of flora. Among the species you will be able to appreciate along the river banks are oleanders, tamarisks, alders, and water lilies. At different times of the year, you can meet moorhens, wild ducks, and stilt birds, in addition to the famous pink flamingoes.
